Marianao is one of the 15 municipalities or districts of the Havana City, Cuba. It is 6 miles southwest of downtown Havana, a municipality connected by train and by bus with the downtown of the city.
In 1989 , the town had a population of 133,016, and up to date the municipality has had a discreet population growth. Marianao is situated on a range of hills about 1500 meters above sea level and is known for its salubrious climate. The city dates from about 1830.
A symbol of the city is the monument built in honor of Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay. Mr. Finlay was a doctor who helped eradicate yellow fever in Cuba in the nineteenth century. The interesting thing about this building is the fact that it has the form of a syringe. The monument is located at the intersection of 100 Street and 31, near several important hospitals.
Marianao is home of the famous Tropicana Club and hosted the Oriental Park Racetrack.
One of the most notable foods made in Marianao is " Chicken Grill ".
