Matanzas City is located on the north coast of Cuba near Matanzas Bay at the mouth of the rivers San Juan, Yumurí and Canimar, which divide the city into three sections, that´s why the city is known as the "city of bridges", becasuse of the number of bridges above the rivers.
It has also been called the Athens of Cuba for the development of its cultural institutions. Besides, it is also the capital of the province and has this status from the seventeenth century. It is located about 100 km east of Havana and 35 km from Varadero.
This area has the characteristic of presenting some caverns in urban areas, including the famous Cuevas de Bellamar, which is possibly one of the oldest tourist institutions in the country. Another tourist site for its natural beauty is the Yumurí Valley. It also has one of the largest commercial ports due to the traffic in the Cuban territory.
