The most interesting keys in Cuba.
When precisely in September of this 2020 Canadian trips to Cayo Coco, in the north-central region of Cuba, resume, knowing the most significant scenarios of this type on the island is now very necessary.

That is the case of many Prensa Latina readers who claim elements about the Cuban keys, an archipelago that has many surprises and beauties to tell.

A significant panorama of nature and environmental care is placed in Cuban tourism by the keys, with their beauty and variety of possibilities for active rest in the face of recreational boating, for example.

The keys, therefore, constitute a particularly special Top, because it can already be said that they appear in the first places of the taste of those who travel to Cuba.

In a Top 10 we therefore put to consideration the Jardines del Rey keys (Coco, Guillermo, Romano, and others keys), Largo del Sur key, Santa María, Levisa, Paraíso (Cayo Mégano de Casiguas), Jutias, Sabinal, Caguama, Cantiles, and Granma or Smith.

They are varied and have multiple proposals, starting with Jardines del Rey, which today constitutes one of the most attractive recreation centers in Cuba, especially for Canadians, British and Argentines, due to its natural characteristics and the development of adequate infrastructure and services.

This name, Jardines del Rey, which has become a brand, groups together several keys with tourist potential in the Sabana-Camagüey archipelago, and such baptism is due to the Spanish explorer Diego Velázquez who from 1513 to 1514 wanted to honor King Fernando el Católico.

And it was also a place immortalized by the American writer Ernest Hemingway in the book Islands in the Gulf. But it is a set of keys that are very colorful.

Cayo Coco is the main axis of the area, whose name is due to the Coco or Forest Ibis bird, white and with a curved beak.

But there are also the Guillermo and Paredón Grande keys, included in the tourist development plans with a potential of up to 22 thousand rooms.

Cayo Coco is the fourth largest island in the Cuban archipelago, with 370 square kilometers and 22 kilometers of beach.

Cayo Guillermo has 13 square kilometers and almost six of beaches between these Pilar, with the largest sandy dune in the Caribbean (15 meters high).

Paredón Grande, the other key of the place, has eight kilometers of beaches in its six square kilometers and the fourth in relevance is Antón Chico.

Cayo Largo del Sur was once a secluded corner of Cuba. Endowed with a particular color, its beaches and hiding places meant a worthy space for tourism and environmental protection.

As an earthly paradise, seafaring recreation uncovered a fashion to visit this Key, and constituted a particular privilege that over time transformed this destination into an ideal place for travelers in search of silence, intimacy and natural beauty.

Located in the south-western part of Cuba, it has history, magic and a future ahead that the tourist authorities want to provide, especially in terms of elements such as underwater photography, walks and the most active vacations possible.

It is a very flat scene, without notable heights, with about 50 feet above sea level and an area of 38 square kilometers, with 27 kilometers in its longest portion.

Cayo Santa María, in the north-central region of Cuba, constitutes the most recent proposal of Cuban tourism in the matter of keys, a well-justified fashion, due to its beauty and infrastructure.

Cayo Santa María is currently one of the most outstanding recreational spots, with many repeat travelers, especially Europeans.

To get to the place, the ideal way is through a path over the waters known by Cubans as Pedraplén, 48 kilometers long, which starts from the town of Caibarién in the north of the central province of Villa Clara.

Cayo Levisa is the name of a 250-hectare island that is located about 6.7 kilometers off the north coast of the western Cuban province of Pinar del Río, in the Gulf of Mexico.

This small island, which is part of the Archipièlago de los Colorados, has only a surface area of 2.5 square kilometers, but it has a magnificent beach that extends along its entire north coast in a length of 2,500 meters.

Cayo Paraíso, also known as Cayo Mégano de Casiguas by fishermen in the area, is located in front of the Strait of Florida on the coast of the Bahía Honda municipality, Pinar del Río province, about nine kilometers northeast of Cayo Levisa and 100 kilometers west of Havana.

Its main attractions are an excellent beach of around 500 meters long, magnificent bottoms for diving and snokerling in the coral reefs very close to the key, isolation and almost total tranquility since access is only by boat.

Cayo Jutías, for its part, is located on the coast of the municipality of Minas de Matahambre, in front of the Straits of Florida and, like Levisa and Paraíso keys, is part of the Archipelago of Los Colorados.

It is located about 175 kilometers west of the city of Havana and access is by road built on the sea for a length of five kilometers.

Cayo Sabinal is a very peaceful place in the north of the eastern Cuban province of Camagüey and surprises with the natural beauty of its beautiful virgin beaches and its more than 30 wetlands, between temporary and permanent.

It has an area of 335 square kilometers and is located very close to and to the west of the Bay of Nuevitas, to the east of Cayo Guajaba, and the Bay of Gloria. Also very close to Playa de Santa Lucía, the main destination in the province of Camagüey.

Cayo Caguama, is an islet located in the Jardines de la Reina archipelago, south of the Camagüey province, with a rich flora and fauna. It constitutes a place dedicated to nature tourism.

Cayo Cantiles is the name of a small island in Cuba, northwest of the Caribbean Sea, which is geographically part of the Canarreos Archipelago and administratively is part of the Special Municipality of Isla de la Juventud in the southwest of Cuba.

Its characteristic is that it is inhabited by a population of monkeys in the wild, which is part of a research station of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, which is why some also call it ‘Monkey Island’.

And Cayo Granma (once Smith) is a small fishing community on the Santiago de Cuba coastline located on an islet located inside the bay of Santiago de Cuba, near the entrance to the channel that links it to the Caribbean Sea.

This place has a different character from those previously mentioned due to its proximity to one of the most important and populated cities in Cuba, but it is very curious due to its shape and location.

And finally, let's add one more to the Top 10, and we mention a little-known and interesting place, the Cayo Campos-Rosario Natural Fauna Refuge.

It is part of the archipelago of Los Canarreos, it is located in the keys located in front of Punta del Este, on the Isla de la Juventud, a chain of beautiful islets of great ecological interest, which move to the east totally unpopulated, except Cayo Largo.

Cayo Campos has an area of 7.9 square kilometers and is separated from Cayo Rosario (18 square kilometers) by two important keys: Ávalos and Cantiles.

Many more could be mentioned, but this list is sufficient to exemplify the variety of scenarios of this type that exist in Cuba.
