From January to June, 2014, Cuba received one million 660,055 tourists, a figure that represents a growth of almost four percent as compared to figures of the same period of 2013.
These results are not totally encouraging for a sector that aspires to reach this year the figure of three million visits and a 10 percent increase with respect to 2013, according to statements by Cuban tourism authorities.
In a report on the arrival of international tourists to the island, published on Tuesday, the National Office of Statistics and Information (ONEI) points out that during the month 181 mil 269 travelers arrived in the Cuban archipelago, that is, 2,588 persons less than those reported in 2013.
According to the document, fewer tourists came from Canada and England –top on the list of nations sending tourists to Cuba- and the same thing happened with Spain and Mexico, which had previously shown a positive tendency.
This slight decrease coincides with the arrival to the summer season, when traditionally less tourists visit the island.
Nevertheless, there's encouraging news for the sector: the recovery of markets like Russia and Italy, which due to commercial mistakes in previous stages had considerably decreased.
Other data of interest in the report are the arrivals reported from Venezuela (99.4 %), Portugal (39.5 %) and Belgium (23 %), markets that are not traditional in terms of sending tourists to Cuba but with very dynamic rhythms. Figures, however, are still below potential.
