Located in the central-eastern part of the Cuban archipelago, the city of Camagüey or Villa de Santa María del Puerto del Principe, Cultural Heritage, celebrates today, February 2nd, its 501 years of existence. Longevous in its tradition, the city receives today a new anniversary with songs and serenades in old squares and parks of extraordinary beauty.
The city, birthplace of Nicolás Guillén, the National Poet and other patriotic and prominent personalities of art and science, exhibits numerous pieces of local architecture in an optimal state of restoration, thanks to government support and the people aiming to preserve and to transcend the beautiful cultural heritage of one of the oldest cities in America.
In commemoration of the date will be celebrated until February 7th the "week of culture of Camagüey", a festival whose witnesses are locals and all those who love history and culture of the city of jars.
To celebrate the date, many buildings have been renovated such as the Film Resort "Casablanca", Convention Center "Santa Cecilia", erected in 1926 and the "Love Park" in Republic Street, all within the historic center of Camagüey, a site that stretchs 54 hectares, considered the country's largest historical center, an example of urban center, away from the main streets and avenues of the city.
